From what I see, it looks ok. Did you upload it to ImageShack or something else? That could fix the size problem.

I think you need to make them big when you open a new GIMP doc. So when you click new, don't change a thing it says(Otherwise type in 650 x 400 or 500). Or just do any size above 150 x 200 for an avatar.
